I wanted to raise awareness about oils today. I didn't used to suffer that badly with oil - however in the past 9 months my tolerance towards this product has dramatically decreased and due to all the illness I had in Cuba due to their love of oil on EVERYTHING and my difficulties back in Europe and America - ( we all it seems are beginning to really love caking on that oil!) I wanted to do my own research into what in the oils could be causing me an issue.
First the main 'refining process', this info came from cavemandoctor.com - thank you for your clear explanation of this process and I hope my readers can understand the dangers from reading your evidence.
The first step in refinement involves extracting the small amount of oil from the plant-based source. This usually involves taking seeds (often genetically engineered to be immune to pesticides), crushing them, heating them to high temperatures, pressing them, and finally, bathing them in a hexane bath and other solvents made from crude petroleum. Petroleum!( Note: Hexane is produced by the refining of crude petroleum oil. It is a mild anaesthetic. Inhalation of high concentrations produces first a state of mild euphoria, followed by sleepiness with headaches and nausea. Chronic intoxication from hexane has been observed in recreational solvent abusers and in workers in the shoe manufacturing, furniture restoration and automobile construction industries where hexane is used as a glue. The initial symptoms are tingling and cramps in the arms and legs, followed by general muscular weakness. In severe cases, atrophy of the skeletal muscles is observed, along with a loss of coordination and problems of vision. In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued regulations on the control of emissions of hexane gas due to its potential carcinogenic properties and environmental concerns. )The oil is then separated from the seed residue and phosphate is added. The residue that is collected is often used as animal feed (hopefully no animals or animal products that we are consuming…).
Step 2: Neutralization, Bleaching, and Deodorization
After reading the title of this section, please be advised we are still discussing vegetable oil and have not switched to cleaning laundry. If you recall from the boring descriptions of the backbone of fats, PUFAs are somewhat defenceless against free-radical damage. Well, step 1, with all of its heating, pressing and chemicals, leaves the vegetable with significant oxidized damage that actually leaves the oil with a foul odour and unwanted colour. This substance then undergoes a process called bleaching, which, just like when you bleach your socks, removes unwanted colours. The final process involves steaming the oils with extremely high temperatures, often over 500º F – much higher than the smoke point of nearly all of these oils – in order to remove residual substances that cause an unwanted taste or odour. This is appropriately called deodorization. Call me crazy, but anything that needs to be deodorized before eating doesn’t sound healthy to me.
While all the steps appear damaging and unhealthy for the oils (neutralization, bleaching, etc.), this last step of deodorization and heating in the process may be the most damaging of all as it severely weakness the fatty acids, leaving them less structurally sound as the high heat carries with it a hefty dose of free radicals. These free radicals wreak havoc on the structure of the fats and are very oxidizing.
However, the demise of your health doesn’t stop here, as many refined vegetable oil contain added butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA),7 both of which have been shown to cause bladder and thyroid cancer in animals.
The Final Product
While the health implications are quite obvious just from the process of making vegetable oil, it actually gets worse. The destruction of the backbone of the oil leaves it oxidized and further weakened to defence against future oxidation and free-radical damage during storage and cooking. This is why the shelf life of vegetable oils is so short; they often go rancid after only 6 months of sitting in your cupboard. Of note, olive oil also goes rancid after 6 months as well, but coconut oil (with its very stable structure) can fight off free-radicals and oxidation and stay good for a year or two. Walnut and sesame oil (which I hope none of you use, or at least please don’t use it with heat but only drizzle it on foods if you MUST use it) can go rancid in as little as 2 months.
To add more insult to injury, most antioxidants that would help us fight possible free radical damage, like vitamin E, are destroyed by this extreme process. Oil that is produced the old fashioned way, such as coconut, and macadamia oil avoid having their antioxidants and vitamin content destroyed. In fact when macadamia nuts, which contain an ample amount of antioxidants, are made into macadamia oil, it remain relatively full of the antioxidants.
Unrefined, and organic coconut oil avoid chemical processing as well. However, you can still find some chemically altered coconut oil, which is known as RBD (refined, bleached, and deodorized). Stay away from these.
The high levels of Omega 6 found within the poly-unsaturated fats in the oil are especially damaging to the body - they are know to cause insulin levels to alter, hormone levels to differ, they begin to attack your cells changing your DNA and they suppress your immunity. These fatty acids play important roles in many biochemical pathways, including those related to inflammation, immunity and blood clotting. When these structures are affected it confuses your body's systems to the extreme. The heating process that occurs right at the end of the refining process gives the oil the chemical structure of plastic. Do our bodies deserve to have to deal with these toxins in the body? They simply can't digest them, leaving them to be stored and do damage on our bodies and cells (causing long-lasting diseases, cancers, immunity disorders, aging and many more) or makes us incredibly ill.
As Caveman Doctor states at the bottom of their website if you want your immune system to work effectively and have a full functioning immune system stay as far away as possible from refined oils.
Unfortunately they are is SO many food products and are difficult to avoid - breads, sauces, biscuits, fried meat, veg, chips, crisps, sweets, chocolates, pastries, frozen dinners, most packaged foods ( to increase shelf life ). If you do suffer with the effects of oil it is best to always cook from fresh and use as many fresh products you can. Not forgetting to use coconut oil to roast and fry foods in or in any recipe requiring oil.
Fast food outlets and restaurants are apparently known according to this recent research to use vegetable & sunflower oil - (being the cheapest) to fry, roast and cook their dishes with. So don't take the risk when out! They won't be using the more expense 'safe' or 'safer' products like nut oils or coconut. They want to make the most money as possible.
With my continuing decline in health ( which I will do an update on when I know more) this is probably why my tolerance to these highly damaging products and toxins are effecting my body more severely every time I consume them. My body has too many toxins within it, doesn't recognise the toxins and isn't able to remove, fight them off effectively - leaving me very unwell.
I used to be able to be slightly ill from chips consumed in restaurant and food outlets ( although I did always try and order rice as I wasn't as ill off this dish but I just want to EAT so would order the chips and deal with the effects.) Where as now the effects of eating chips or having any dish containing oil ( OFTEN RICE, VEG, SALADS) now as well making dining out a living nightmare- to risky. I no longer just get stomach cramps and feel sick, I get really bad brain fog ( sometimes causing me to pass out ), my throat swells up with lumps visible on the outside, headaches, I can't swallow and I have begun struggling to breath.
It has now got to the point where really I can't and shouldn't eat out because the effects on my body is harmful to my well-being. This is upsetting to me as eating out is my favourite social activity and of course you all know I LOVE my travelling!!! Food is part of learning about the countries culture and when you can't enjoy this pleasure it does cast a shadow over your experiences.
I have also found out through today's research that I may have suffered more in Cuba and America as Europe have banned two types of bleaches that are added to our oils here but these laws aren't implicated outside of Europe ( please don't let Brexit effect our food industry we need these types of laws!) Especially in Cuban everything is done to keep costs down meaning the lowest grade & most toxic chemicals will be used within their foods. A nightmare to my body at this point in time.
I know and hope that shortly my health will be improved and I will be able to tolerant these foods again, making my life SO, SO much easier and better, however I will still avoid them if I can as I never want to be in the place health wise I am currently finding myself in.
Again I am not saying cut these oils out completely - 'eat clean' and basically nothing. NO. They are in everything and extremely embedded in our food industry so don't go cutting out all food - EAT! ENJOY YOUR FOOD! The message is, if you can use alternatives spend that little bit extra, make more of an effort - your body will thank you!
I apologise for the long post today, but I really wanted to do this research for myself because I wanted to understand why y body was becoming more intolerant to oils and effecting me so badly and my finding have left me wanting to share the knowledge I have learnt because I feel it is important.
I was watching one of my fave YouTubers yesterday and she was in Paris on a trip paid for by a make-up brand. They were enjoying a lavish meal, all paid for by the brand hosting them and she told us that all the girls were discussing how they were eating and enjoying the foods but that most of them were intolerant or had allergies towards the foods. They just didn't want to spoil their experience, be difficult or cause any issues due to the brand paying a lot of money for the meal. Ultimately this meant they ate the food and many of them ended up skipping after dinner cocktails because they just wanted and needed to go to bed making the excuse they had work to catch up o but admitting once in bed they felt rough. This just shows how bad this ever-growing issue is becoming and we don't, nobody does deserve to miss out on experiences and life's pleasures due to allergens, intolerances and ultimately our bodies unable to break down the toxins and high level of toxic chemicals we are putting into our bodies daily. These issues make simple tasks become stressful.
I hope you some-what enjoyed this post and it helps you understand a little better why you may struggle when eating out or when eating certain foods that may contain these oils which you didn't realise.
Let me know if you suffer with refined oils and what symptoms you experience, what foods trigger reactions?
I hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend.
Love and peace
Feeling sluggish and rubbish when you have woken up? Get boosting up on bananas the more the better - they will help settle your stomach, boosting digestion, they are a mood enhancer, they will give you the energy you need and keep you full. Buy my book for banana receipe ideas.
Wake up every morning and ATLEAST have one glass of lemon water before doing anything else! Ideally try to drink a litre of water. The lemon wakes up your digestive system ready for the day and has great cleansing properties.
Check your dairy and meat intake - dairy can sit in your system for up to seven days unable to digest properly. Meaning other foods also get neglected and nurtients aren't absorbed properly and you feel extremely bloated. Go and smell your food bin, your stomach will be in that state. Rotting foods in your belly - hmm nice.
DO NOT FEAR CARBS - THEY ARE NOT THE ENEMY! CARB UP!!
Bananas, Rice, Potatoes, Leafy Greens, Corn, Beans, Lentils etc PACK THEM IN GO MAD.
NEVER COUNT CALORIES - NEVER RESTRICT!! These restriction 'starvation' diets who tell you to only eat 500 calories a day then have a treat day - where you binge out and eat WAY too much, is simply messing up your metabolism and on your binge days yours body stores all the fat meaning you gain weight because it knows it is going to go back into starvation mode and needs to hold onto every little thing it can. HELLO WEIGHT GAIN.
Life is too short not to live it to the full, making yourself happy.
