We are made up of 37.2 trillion cells that is a lot of cells for Borrelia to work on. This being one of the main reasons people don't always get symptoms straight away, their symptoms change and symptoms become more threatening and debilitating over time as the hijacking through the body continues.
We are fighting a huge battle. 1 of us against 37.2 trillion! Is it any wonder we live in a constant state of exhaustion?
We lose all hope and our energy so easily on flare up after flare up after flare up.
Here are some possible causes for your flare up's;
1. Lack of sleep;
Lack of sleep doesn't just lower our mood, means we generally have less energy and can decrease our ability to cope with pain and stress. It also is a vital time for the body to rest and detox. Without this rest and detox time your body can't flush out the toxins from the day before creating a back-log. Being unable to do this means the toxins spend more time within the body and they cause more inflammation causing heightened symptoms. A solid eight hours sleep, longer if you can is the perfect dose of detox medicine.
If you have less that eight hours understand that day will be more challenging and really try to pace yourself more, cancel plans to give yourself more rest time and ensure your day is not overwhelming.
Possible Sleeping Aids -
- a bubble bath - to relax and de-stress from the day. Warming you up and getting you ready for bed.
- hot glass of almond milk ( or any kind of milk you prefer ).
- herbal sleeping tablets - Nytol etc.
- mint teas - to settle you stomach down and calm the mind.
- don't go to bed until you are really sleepy.
- any chance you are falling asleep and can sleep - sleep!
2. Deep Tissue Massage;
I love a good deep massage. 'No pain - no gain.'
However I used ache for days after a massage and just accepted the pain as my muscle tension just being released. More than tension was being released though!
Dead Lyme bacteria gets stored and in the muscles as the Borrelia moves on a continues to reproduce in your major organs and tissues. Having a deep massage releases these dead bacterias into the bloodstream causing you immune system to be forced to wake up and flush them out of the body. This can cause a 'herx' reaction ( heightened symptoms) as the body tries to 'detox' and may also be been attack by new Borrelia bacteria to stop it from flushing them and their dead counter parts out of the body.
People with Lyme shouldn't avoid massages all together however. We should have more of a Swedish massage to help with pain levels over something that goes deeper.
- opt for a Swedish massage.
-opt for alternative relief, Reiki, Reflexology and so on.
Showering always zaps me and I always feel worse after. I dread having to have a shower and wash my hair. Now it's come to light that showers leave many Lymie's in debilitating pain sometimes lasting days.
This is due to the pressure of the shower against the body. Like a massage the pressure from the shower can release toxins into the bloodstream and cause a herx reaction.
- shower sat down on a bench, chair or in the bath.
- take a bath.
- have a shower in the bath so you can quickly wash your hair then sit and warm up in the bath.
- ask for help.
Overall we need to detox as in the long run it's the secret to our recovery and better health. Though going through the detox process will cause flare up's. As the bacteria are drawn out of the tissues and organs for the immune system to fight and then the liver has to efficiently flush out these toxins. This process doesn't just put pressure on your body but the bacteria knowing it is under threat begin their efforts in reproducing to protect their 'family' line that has hold of your body.
Often the bacteria will fight back blocking the bodies detox channels so they can re-mobilise with ease. Example the liver and that is the exact problem I am currently having. They attack the organs and block the channels trying to flush them out causing heightened symptoms and overall body inflammation.
- opt for herbal remedies over strong prescribed med's. The bacteria don't recognise the herbs as well as the medications and therefore fail to react the same or as quickly.
- 'when you are going through hell, keep going.' - Churchill. Understand you have to feel worse before you get better and that actually feeling worse may be a good sign your detox is going well.
- add detox foods and drinks to your diet; lemons, green tea, garlic, milk thistle, mint, apple cider vinegar.
Boy don't we know this one well. Food that looks like heaven, makes your mouth water and what your heart, mind and stomach are cheering for may result in hell and make your stomach flip not soothe it.
Certain foods and groups especially dairy, gluten, wheat and refined sugars feed the bacteria and can cause the bacteria to not only steal the nutrients and minerals for themselves but to us that extra fuel to multiply. You guessed it, heightening your symptoms and overwhelming your body sending it into shock and confusion.
Our food is so processed with added toxins that if we can it's advised to eat as much fresh foods as we can, always washing our foods and avoiding food in bottles and tins that contains endless numbers of ingredients. To avoid any bacteria reproduction you can prevent.
- buy organic if possible
- eat earth foods - plants, seeds and nuts
- buy meat and fish fresh from butchers & fish shops.
- avoid processed foods wherever possible.
- show in the FreeFrom sections of your supermarket for more food ideas
- use plant sugar
- wash foods to remove pesticides, fertilisers and added toxins.
Food for thought; Lyme can distort hormones, glucose levels, the endocrine system and nutrient intake as well!
Lymie's often find themselves changing cleaning products, perfumes, soaps etc because they become sensitive to chemicals. This is often because the body becomes so confused, sluggish and inefficient in removing toxins that it because extremely backed up. Any extra on top of an already overwhelming work load causes the person to become intolerate to the extra toxins as the body does not know how to deal with them. This is the same sense for foods, chemicals and materials.
When you begin to react to more foods, materials and chemicals use this as a signal that you need to start a detoxing programme. To help aid the body be able to cope for efficiently and reduce inflammation.
- use natural products. There are plenty of soaps, washing up liquid, cleaning products etc that are now plant based focused. Eco is a great brand.
- check shampoos and conditiors for gluten yes it seems that some companies put gluten in their hair products!
- shower gels and bubble baths may contain milk or creams ( avoid these ).
- avoid strong products loaded with harmful toxins lime bleach.
Too hot can cause the bacteria to die and causes a herx reaction and often a lot of inflammation in the body. Causing you to feel truly awful. This makes sense as I love the heat and the sun but over the past few years I go from cold to too hot, unbearably hot leading me to panic as you begin feeling dizzy and extremely sick. Not until about two years ago did the heat really start effecting me in this way. I would have to slowly get up, I would feel irritated and sick. When we were on a horse ride in Cuba it nearly killed me. The heat and unable to get sheltered, or water, at the hottest part of the afternoon, been thrown up and down. My stomach was aching from overworking my muscles trying to stabilise myself, I felt dizzy and my eyes were blurred, I was sweating buckets with panic and feeling sick with all the stress, whilst trying, trying so much to smile and somehow enjoy this once in a lifetime experience whilst feeling like I could pass out with pain at any moment. At the time I and my family probably just thought I was being a diva but boy did I feel like hell and it really knocked me for a few days after. Aching like crazy alllllll over. It now begins to make sense.
Cold weather! The winter's are challeneging for Lymie's we are cold so our circulation slows and toxins aren't being flushed out causing back-logs of inflammation , whilst the colder temperatures work in the bacteria's favour allowing them to reproduce in a comfort temperature. Many Lymie's express how hard they find the winter period due to their bodies being so inflamed with toxins, extra infections and extra herxing.
Merry Christmas - I think I'd rather have coal in my stocking that more pain.
- keep layered up
- keep warm
- avoid being out in extreme weather
- avoid unwell people
- eat warming foods and spices
8. The Moon;
The Earth's position when we experience a full/new moon, to the sun, tidal and gravity pressure suits the bacteria perfectly. Allowing them the best surroundings to reproduce in.
To add salt to the wound the Borrelia bacteria work on the same time cycle as the moon. Allowing the dates to coincide and align. Causing Lymie's flare up's, new symptoms and heighten pain levels during the time around a full moon every month.
It seems there is more than wolves to worry about on a full moon!
- up treatments during this time
- try to detox
The heat and contracting the muscles can cause the release of the bacteria from the tissues. The bacteria entering the bloodstream causes heightened reactions which may last for hours or days after until the body has flushed out the excess toxins.
Ever felt more achy, fatigued or stiff after exercising that has lasted an extended length of time? It may be time to rest and detox!
- rest and recover fully.
- detox with vitamins and foods.
Yes even this can cause Lymie's increased pain and problems.
The main nutrients used in sex are magnesium and zinc. Two nutrients Lymie's are usually already deficient along with iron. As the bacteria need this vital nutrients to aid their survival.
Using these already depleted levels of nurtients can cause the body to almost go into a state of 'starvation' and reacts with pain as aswell as leaving the person low on energy level as warning signals.
- take supplements.
- eat foods with higher levels of these vitamins in.
- regular bloods to monitor levels.
11. High Stress Levels;
Stress can cause inflammation in your adrendials. When this occurs the immune system is furthermore suppressed. Your body goes into fight or flight mode. Causing you to feel far more fatigued as well as vulnerable to further infections.
Stress can also increase glucose levels which the bacteria feed off - leaving you to experience symptoms of weak and shaky muscles. High glucose levels also sparks hormones levels to alter which helps the bacteria thrive and causes a lot of imbalances in the body.
These imbalances and extra stress is very taxing on the body, it becomes too overwhelmed and begins to shut down not fighting as effectively and as efficiently as needed to keep you well and functioning.
- practise mindfulness and mindfulactivities
- remove yourself from stressful situtations
- ask for help
- ask for advice on decisions
- talk! Don't bottle up your worries
- practise self-care, 'me' time
To finish -
When having to live with chronic Lyme we must learn to listen to our bodies, we must be our own researchers and in the end our own hero's.
Our body's may be under attack but our body is still our healing body! We must do all we can to look after, care and protect it.
Love and peace
Feeling sluggish and rubbish when you have woken up? Get boosting up on bananas the more the better - they will help settle your stomach, boosting digestion, they are a mood enhancer, they will give you the energy you need and keep you full. Buy my book for banana receipe ideas.
Wake up every morning and ATLEAST have one glass of lemon water before doing anything else! Ideally try to drink a litre of water. The lemon wakes up your digestive system ready for the day and has great cleansing properties.
Check your dairy and meat intake - dairy can sit in your system for up to seven days unable to digest properly. Meaning other foods also get neglected and nurtients aren't absorbed properly and you feel extremely bloated. Go and smell your food bin, your stomach will be in that state. Rotting foods in your belly - hmm nice.
DO NOT FEAR CARBS - THEY ARE NOT THE ENEMY! CARB UP!!
Bananas, Rice, Potatoes, Leafy Greens, Corn, Beans, Lentils etc PACK THEM IN GO MAD.
NEVER COUNT CALORIES - NEVER RESTRICT!! These restriction 'starvation' diets who tell you to only eat 500 calories a day then have a treat day - where you binge out and eat WAY too much, is simply messing up your metabolism and on your binge days yours body stores all the fat meaning you gain weight because it knows it is going to go back into starvation mode and needs to hold onto every little thing it can. HELLO WEIGHT GAIN.
Life is too short not to live it to the full, making yourself happy.
